Oil leaks on BMW engines don’t always mean a blown head gasket.

On many BMW 3 Series and 5 Series models from 2006 and newer, including six-cylinder and select four-cylinder engines, oil can leak from the oil filter housing and spread across the engine bay. This can make the leak appear far more serious than it actually is.
The oil filter housing gasket is a straightforward repair, but there is one important detail to keep in mind: coolant flows through the oil filter housing, so fluids must be properly topped off after replacement.
