Oil leaks on BMW engines don’t always mean a blown head gasket.
In this Inside the Brands episode, CRP Automotive explains a common BMW oil leak that is often misdiagnosed as a major engine failure but is usually caused by a leaking oil filter housing gasket.
On many BMW 3 Series and 5 Series models from 2006 and newer, including six-cylinder and select four-cylinder engines, oil can leak from the oil filter housing and spread across the engine bay. This can make the leak appear far more serious than it actually is.
The oil filter housing gasket is a straightforward repair, but there is one important detail to keep in mind: coolant flows through the oil filter housing, so fluids must be properly topped off after replacement.
This video covers:
A common source of BMW oil leaks
Why these leaks are often mistaken for head gasket failures
What to watch for during oil filter housing gasket service
This issue affects millions of BMW vehicles still on the road and remains one of the most frequent oil leak repairs on these platforms.
