  • ITB Episode 49: The Difference Between Low, Mid, and High SAPS in Motor Oil

Earlier in our Inside the Brands series, we did a short video on SAPS. Since then, we’ve received additional questions so we wanted to do a quick follow-up that goes into a little more detail about what they really are and the reason for motor oils with low, mid, and high SAPS.

SAPS or Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus, and Sulfur, are a component of European synthetic motor oils additive content. Sulfated ash is a byproduct of the burning additives that help oil cleanliness and protect against soot. Phosphorus and Sulfur help with the oils anti-wear properties so we can achieve the extended intervals that the European synthetic oils require.

SAPS can cause challenges with diesel particulate filters and catalysts, so ‘Low SAPS’ are used in diesel synthetic motor oils. CRP offers the three ranges of SAPS, Low, Mid, and High.

Our 5W-30-SP3 is a newly formulated high performance engine oil that provides extended oil drain intervals in modern engines. Using state-of-the-art additive technology and synthetic base oils, a “low SAPS” oil (“low ash generating oil”) was blended in a way that preserves the catalyst and environment while maintaining outstanding engine performance.

Our 5W-40-HP2 is a “mid SAPS” synthetic motor oil formulation with OE approvals for Audi/Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche. It was designed for all year use. This new formulation allows for longer changing intervals, and it preserves the catalyst, while maintaining outstanding engine performance.

Our 5W-30-HP formulation includes “high SAPS” and is geared towards the more traditional European car market that require these synthetic motor oils. It can be used in all gasoline and diesel engines containing turbo chargers as well as non-turbocharged vehicles requiring 5W-30.
