In this episode of Inside the Brands, CRP Automotive’s David Hirschhorn offers some advice on why it’s increasingly important to double check a vehicle’s wheel diameter before ordering a replacement steering rack.
Here’s why: At least one manufacturer uses different racks for the same model, based on the wheel size of the vehicle.
For example, the 2011-2014 Ford Mustang — depending on the trim levels and options of the individual vehicle — could have one of three different EPS racks.
The CRP part numbers for the AAE-brand replacement racks are:
ER1004: For vehicles with 17” wheels
ER1074: For vehicles with 18” wheels
ER1075: For vehicles with 19” & 20” wheels
It’s important to get the correct rack or risk rubbing OR a less-than optimal turning radius.
You see, while the base rack is pretty much the same, there are important differences, such as the thickness of the steering rack travel limiters, which are tailored to the wheel size. So vehicles with 17-inch diameter wheels get one version of the rack, vehicles with 18-inch wheels get another, and Mustangs with wheels 19 inches or bigger get yet another version.
So if you work on 2011-2014 Mustangs with EPS racks, make sure that you are getting the right rack for the job. And keep in mind that Ford is not the only OEM we’ve heard about that’s using different limiters for the same model.
If you have any questions about whether you are spec’ing the right rack for a job, don’t hesitate to contact the pros at AAE.
