For decades, the viscosity for multi-grade motor oils tended to be something like 10W-40 or 5W-30. But in recent years, synthetic low viscosity oils like 0W-20 have become more commonplace.
There’s a good reason for that: the government CAFE standards established in 2012 stipulate that manufacturers must meet a 54.5 MPG target average fuel economy for all the vehicles they make by 2025.
To help hit the very ambitious CAFE target, car manufacturers are turning to lower displacement engines, often relying on turbocharging to help these engines make sufficient power. These smaller turbocharged engines run extremely hot, requiring advanced formulations of motor oil to protect the engine parts from overheating and premature wear. Going forward, motor oil formulations for most new vehicles will be low-viscosity formulas that include highly technical wear protection additives.
Pentosin has offered OE-approved synthetic motor oil for European vehicles for quite some time, but has recently expanded into low-viscosity oils with strict OE-specific formulations that include the wear inhibitors.
